"From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.” Mark 13:28-29
For most Americans, the Israeli-Arab conflict is half a world away and unimportant. All most Americans know is that our country has been Israel’s biggest supporter and it is our support for Israel that causes the Muslims of the world to hate us.
I used to hold many of those same opinions. A two-week study tour in Israel radically changed my perspective. I saw the vast difference between the reality on the ground and the filtered truth/revised history I had been fed all my life. I came back with a strong sympathy for the Israeli people who live with the threat of terrorism everyday and an equally strong desire to share what I learned.
As Americans, we should be concerned about Israel because they are the lone voice of democratic “sanity” in a region populated by extremists and despots. As Christians, we need to recognize our connection to both the land and the people of Israel through Jesus Christ. Finally, many scholars have interpreted the above passage as indicating that Israel is God’s “timer” for the End Times and the Second Coming.
King David in Psalm 122 writes of the importance of Jerusalem. His plea to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Ps. 122:6) is no less important to all people today as it was for the Israelites nearly 3,000 years ago.
